Economic insecurity, racial anxiety, and right‐wing populism

This paper studies the roles of economic insecurity (EI) and attitudes to racial inequality as predictors voting patterns in 2016 US election. Using data from Voter Survey, we show that both perceptions EI concerns over anti-White discrimination are significant correlates Republican support. Effect sizes on much larger than those found EI, although effects become when accounting for short-term long-term stress. We also there is very little heterogeneity across groups—both Whites minorities more likely vote experiencing insecurity. Our results suggest policies mitigate micro-level risk may lessen support populist political candidates.
